HySISI

Green hydrogen across borders

Green hydrogen can play an important role in the energy transition wherever direct electrification is difficult. This includes hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, cement and chemicals, as well as applications in heavy and public transport. These sectors are critical for regional competitiveness and require innovative solutions to meet climate targets.

To enable hydrogen technologies to be used on a larger scale in the future, aligned strategies, suitable infrastructure and cross-border co-operation are needed.

This is exactly where HySISI comes in.

HySISI stands for Hydrogen Synergies for Interregional Systems Integration. The first-of-its-kind cross-border co-operation in the field of green hydrogen in Central and Eastern Europe supports the Interreg AT-HU 2021-2027 Programme's Green and Resilient Border Region Priority. The project is developing a cross-border hydrogen strategy in Austria and Hungary and examines how green hydrogen can be produced, stored and used locally to strengthen energy security, enhance system resilience and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.

  • Project Duration

    Project start: December 2025

    Project end: November 2027

  • Focus

Cross-border hydrogen strategy with a focus on industry, hard-to-abate sectors, heavy transport and public transport

  • Region

    Austria and Hungary

Wien Energie's role

Wien Energie contributes its experience in renewable energy generation, energy infrastructure and practical applications to HySISI. As lead partner, Wien Energie coordinates the consortium and works with the project partners to lay the foundations for better integrating hydrogen systems into urban and industrial areas. By integrating hydrogen technologies, stakeholders can provide clean fuel, store excess renewable energy and reduce fossil-fuel dependence.

The consortium
Partners from Hungary are ENASCO, DDRIÜ/STRIA and ZALA County. Austrian partners are WIVA P&G and Wien Energie, with Wien Energie acting as lead partner.

The objective

Through strategy development, stakeholder mapping and networking, the project creates the basis for a cross-border hydrogen economy. This process is intended to result in a cross-border hydrogen strategy for the participating regions. A further objective is to define shared priorities for Austria and Hungary, promote sustainable solutions, facilitate knowledge exchange across sectors and public actors, and prepare future hydrogen initiatives in the region. The initiative establishes a collaborative framework to align efforts, share knowledge and speed up regional decarbonisation.
